I am very excited to announce that the Morgantown Elks Lodge #411’s annual ‘Derby Dayz & Cash Bash’ will be held on February 23, 2019. However, it has been brought to my attention that many may not have an understanding of what this so called ‘Derby Dayz’ is all about, and “What do I get for my $25?”.
Let me start with the easy part…the Cash Bash. Each ticket you purchase is individually numbered. The night of the event, purchased tickets are drawn randomly out of a bucket after each race beginning with race #2 through race #9 inclusively (eight tickets total), each receiving $100 in cash. After race #10 the ticket pulled will received $500 in cash. You do not have to be present to win any of the cash prizes.
During the course of the night, hors d’oeuvres will be served in the dining room. When our club manager Tammy serves up hors d’oeuvres, there is nothing ‘light’ about them. Now you should not plan on making a meal of them, however, the munchies will keep you satisfied as you expend all of your energy jumping around cheering on your favorite horse as they come around that final turn and head down the straight away to the finish line. What? Oh yeah, I haven’t mentioned the best part of the night, the horse race.
In your packet you will find a “Horse Ownership Registration" form. This allows you to ‘buy’ a horse. OK, so you can’t really buy a horse for $10, but you can name it…..whatever you want. That’s right, but be prepared, some of the names get…well I’ll just say…interesting. Therefore, this is not an event for children. The fun part is hearing our race announcer reciting the names of the horses as they race around the track on the big screen, in true race fashion. And she is darn good!!!! Amazingly so!!! The owner of the winning horse gets the $50 purse and bragging rights.
Not an owner, then pick your favorite horse to win. Follow your horse during the parade, to the post, and into the starting gate. As the race track announcer proclaims "And They're Off," the gate opens and the horses head down the back stretch, through the turns, and down the home stretch. Numbers appearing on the bottom of the screen clearly show the order of the first four horses. Official results are posted as a full screen graphic to verify the order of finish. Did your horse win? Do you hold a winning ticket? Take that ticket to the window and claim your prize.
The horse you picked did not win! Don’t worry; there are nine more races to follow.
I have one recommendation. When you fill out the “Horse Ownership Registration" form and mail it in to the lodge, we cannot guarantee the color of your horse, the number of your horse, or in what race you horse might appear. But if you bring your ownership form to the lodge, our bartender will be happy to assist you in those choices.
Oh, I almost forgot, your $25 ticket also gets you a ‘limited open bar’. The open bar will include soft drinks, and certain domestic can beers, wine, and mixed drinks and will be available from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm. If you like the good stuff, and I like the good stuff, our full bar will be available with our everyday low prices.
If you have any further questions or comments, stop by the lodge and our qualified bartenders can assist.
Fraternally Yours,
Gary Bechdolt

P.S. If all that’s not enough, there’s also a Derby Dayz Hat Contest as well. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes will be awarded for the best ‘Kentucky Derby Style’ hat.
